Marvin Rhodes (1949-2017) was an Atlanta-based photographer & Vietnam war veteran. He earned a Masters Degree from Georgia State University and taught Photography at the Atlanta College of Art, the Southeastern Center for the Arts and Kennesaw State University. Marvin was active in the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs, where he received many grants and earned the Award of Excellence from the City of Atlanta and Georgia State University Alumni Association. Marvin was known for being straightforward, honest and having a very quick wit. He helped countless homeless veterans with a selfless concern of never being noticed. His work graces the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, High Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His self-published book, "Testify!: Vietnam veterans in photographs & interviews" was released in 1985, preceded in 1983 by "Time on the Street", published by Nexus Press. Marvin was a friend and mentor of Different Trains Gallery director Shawn Vinson, whom he entrusted to manage his photo archive. This small retrospective exhibition opens with a reception honoring the artist on Thursday, September 19 from 5-8 pm and a discussion with fellow photographers is being planned.
